GRANT FUNDING FOR YOUR NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION

GETTING GRANT FUNDING FOR YOUR NONPROFIT
ORGANIZATION

<fulltext>Do you need grant funding for your nonprofit organization? If you
do you are most certainly not alone in your needs. This combined
with the fact that because of regular government budget cuts
there’s not as many federal dollars available as there once was.
And because of our current economic recession foundation dollars
are down as well. What you now have are some serious concerns
facing your nonprofit organization.

On the other hand there is still a vast source of funding out
there for your organization. But, even more so today than ever,
in order for you to get your share of the treasure that’s out for
you. You must approach the matter of grant getting in an
organized and systematic manner.

And you must make the process of obtaining grants a regular and
ongoing activity for your organization. Here are some guidelines
to help you get the grant funds you seek:

* Carefully assess your funding needs by asking yourself a number
of very important questions, such as: How much funding do you
need? How will this funding be used? Who will benefit from this
funding? And, how will this funding be used? Having clear answers
to these kinds of questions are a key part of any request for
funding, and will help you determine the kinds of grantors you
should be approaching.

* Make a list of your target grantors specific to your needs. You
can do this by going to the main branch of your public library.
Where you should find some kind of grant research center with a
wealth of grant funding directories you can use.

* If you live in a very small community and your library doesn’t
have a grant research center. You should contact The Foundation
Center, 79 Fifth Ave, New York, NY 10003, (212)620-4230 where
you’ll find a wealth of grant directories too, that you can
purchase directly from them. Be sure to request a copy of their
current catalog when you contact them.

* Contact each grantor on your list for a copy of their current
funding guidelines, and proposal requirements. While all grant
directories do list grantors basic funding requirements and
rules. You should still always contact them before you apply.
Since what’s listed could be actually much different from what
they currently do, and your time is too valuable to waste it.

* Prepare a clear concise attractive development proposal of
between 8 to 12 pages. While many large nonprofit organization
tailor make a proposal for each program or project they’re
marketing to get specific grantor, this can be a very time
consuming process if your organization is small or mid-sized,
without the staff and support that many large agencies have. Thus
it’s better to prepare a standard proposal covering your capital,
program, and operating needs. Then target it with a well-prepared
submission cover letter.

* Even in those cases where a grantor does have specific proposal
requirements. You’ll find still that most of what you’ve already
prepared can be incorporated into your custom proposal quite
easily. Allowing you to prepare custom proposals in those
situations where it’s needed. This is especially true when
seeking federal funding, where your proposal must be targeted to
the requirements of the federal grantor.

* Keep in mind the fact that the easiest kinds of grant to obtain
are grants for capital needs items. And grants for unique,
exciting, and innovative programs and projects. Whereas the
hardest items to get grant for are operating cost items. So you
should use grantors primarily for capital and program funding
objectives. And secure private gifts from individuals to raise
most of your operating cost funds.

* Set aside a block of time each week, even if it’s only three or
four hours. During which time you or a designated staff member
will devote to the three key areas of effective grant
solicitation. Namely, researching funding sources, preparing, and
submitting proposals. Doing this will keep you up to date on
who’s doing what, improve proposal preparation skills, and keep
those grants coming in regularly.

Yes, you can get the grant funds you need to effectively operate
your nonprofit organization. And help all those people who need
the help that you provide them. But you must go about getting the
grants you need in an organized systematic fashion. And refuse to
take "no" for an answer, because the cost of doing otherwise is
much too great for so very many.

Berwyn J.
Stand up comedian or bubble blower?

Learning to swim is like learning stand up comedy. This article will have you blowing comedy bubbles in no time.

<fulltext>Copyright 2006 Matt Canham

I got an email from a friend of mine here not so long ago. He is late 20s - a few years younger than me - and in this email, he told me how he had taught himself to swim.

He explained in great detail the embarrassment of holding on to the edge of the pool blowing bubbles, practising the breathing technique before graduating to a kick board and doing laps up and down the pool.

With continued effort, he managed to teach himself to complete a lap of freestyle and now here he is - 5 months later - swimming 1 mile each day. He isn't going to be trialling for the Olympic team anytime soon, but he has become proficient at it after a relatively short while.

So too, does it go with learning stand up comedy. It might feel like blowing bubbles at times and can you either sink or swim up on stage, but it is a skill you can learn and like any other, you can get so good at it, it can become a way to make money.

The bubble blowing of stand up comedy.

I think one of the most important initial steps should be to watch comedians who are already established. Live performances are best, or DVDs of live performances, where you can see the performer in their element doing what they do best.

When you are ready to practise breathing techniques, watch each comedian and make a note of how they construct their jokes. Take note of their delivery, their timing. Is the punchline obvious? Try to think about why you find a joke funny. Even better, observe the way they react when a joke receives only a mild reaction.

As for the whole issue of copying, here is where I stand. If you directly take the words of another person and deliver them yourself, that is stealing material. However, if you take a concept and improve on it, then that is fair game. A lot of people have made millions by improving inventions by only 10%, why shouldn't a student of comedy have the same opportunity?

There is also the issue of delivery. Just because something bombs for one comic, doesn't mean it will be the same for the next guy. In most cases, the failure is the result of the actual performer, not the show and in fact, once you have a routine and some jokes, your work should be on improving the performer.

The first step is to be honest with yourself. If you are cynical and full of hatred, that's ok, that's who you are. Similarly, if you have the most positive outlook on life, then that should set the tone for your act. Audiences will relate to people who are honest and comfortable in their own skin. Audiences aren't dumb. They can sense people who attempt to put on or try to form an image. If it's incongruent with your body language, your mannerisms and your vibe, you will be blown out and bomb.

The next step after blowing bubbles is to graduate to the kick board - the actual jokes or material you will be performing. For comedy to be effective, it has to be congruent with who you are - we already know this. So too, do the subject matter for your comedy. It has to be personal and about things that are interesting or important to you. A big part of what makes it funny, is the enthusiasm towards the subject from the comic. It should be something you are at least passionate about so people watching will think, this guy knows a lot about this.

How effective would Tim Allen have been if he didn't like cars and power tools?

The best way to go about the material gathering phase is to write down your interests, your hobbies and then all the things about those that you like, dislike and amuse you. Chances are if they amuse you, they will also amuse others.

Once you have material, you are ready to start swimming. At first, it will feel weird, your timing will be off and you'll most likely get water up your nose. Don't worry - it's all part of the process. It will take some time to work out how your jokes, your personality and your timing fit in with each other. The important thing is to practice. At home, at work, at the bus stop, practise on anyone that will listen. Test single jokes, test openers, test it all.

Only when you are the stage where you can put a few laps together, should you think about performing. Remember, you have to get over your fear of the water, learn how to blow bubbles and use the kick board before you can swim.

A report with the preliminary results was made, they consulted to great experts of reputation the International as George F. Bass and Cemal Pulak and the report were sent to the authorities and competent organisms of Spain and to UNESCO.

It has spent a year, and still no scientific institution has shown interest to study the solid evidences discovered by the team of collaborating explorers of the investigator and escriptólogo Georgeos Diaz-Montexano, intellectual author of the theories that support these discoveries on the identification of the kingdom of the Atlantis with the Atlantic towns of the coasts of Iberia and Morocco.

It is the first time in all history that is discovered architectonic rest and metal devices under the sea in a location that agrees in a 100% with the descriptions offered by Plato on the geographic place where it was the island and the Acropolis of the Atlantis.

Some investigators protest to have found Atlantis in other places of the World like Jim Allen, that places in a so remote place of Gibraltar as mountains of Bolivia, whereas Robert Samarst now is conceited to have discovered the Atlantis near the coasts of Cyprus, but Sarmast has still not discovered nor a single archaeological evidence, the only thing that does since it initiated his expeditions is to show pretty drawings of virtual maps recreated by knoll computers and natural geologic formation that it interprets like rest of Atlantis buried by the marine bottom.

The Spanish investigator Georgeos Diaz-Montexano, the German Ulf Ritcher and the Dutch Jonas Berghman are the only investigators who defend with scientific rigor and adjusting to Plato's texts and many other authors of the antiquity the only possible location of Atlantis: the one that describes Plato, that is to say, near the Columns of Hercules (Gibraltar), Gadeira (Cadiz, Andalusie, Spain) and the Atlas (Morocco).

The Georgeos Diaz-Montexano's equipment of collaborator is the unique one who has shown the world submarine archaeological evidences that have been analyzed by the experts and they have still not been possible to recognize or to classify. These evidences are to depths that correspond with the old level of the sea of several thousands of years before the times of Solón and Plato.

It is paradoxical that the team of Spanish investigators has still not demanded the discovery of Atlantis, in spite of being those that more scientific evidences have and that nevertheless, Robert Sarmarst does not matter to him to affirm to the world that already has discovered Atlantis when the only thing that it has at the moment is not more than a few natural hills and formation - until it demonstrates to the opposite and a few virtual maps and recreations where it is reconstructed what Sarmast thinks that must have, but that not yet exists.

Robert Sarmast not yet has shown the world nor a single archaeological evidence that is solid and worthy to consider, whereas Georgeos Diaz-Montexano has shown to not one but several deposits with archaeological evidences "sui generis" that would have to be object of study between the scientists. Robert Sarmast has guided fundamentally by the speculations of the book pseudo-religious of Urantia, whereas Jonas Berghman, Ulf Ritcher, and in special, Georgeos Diaz-Montexano, prefers to guide itself by the scientific and philological study of the oldest manuscripts known Plato, and the scientific evidences contributed by geology, oceanography, the paleogeography, the sismology and archaeology.

Nevertheless, and against all logic, Robert Sarmast he is receiving, probably the greater advertising support at level the International that has never received a finder of Atlantis.

How can be explained these paradoxes?

Perhaps exists some false prejudice against the inhabitants of Spain and Morocco?

+ information and related links:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1011563/posts

http://www.AtlantisDiscovery.com/news

http://DiscoveryAtlantis.sytes.net

http://usuarios.lycos.es/atlantisbook/atlantis_news_georgeos_diaz.html (Abstract Atlantis in Andalusia.

<fulltext>How To Be Safe While Traveling

by: Scott Flint

The most dangerous time in your life, when you are most likely to be attacked is when you are traveling in an unfamiliar area.

Tourists are the favorite prey of the goblins of the world for the following reasons:

They are easy to spot. Tourists make the mistake of not blending in, wearing clothes that stand out. Shorts in a climate where everyone else is wearing pants. Brand-new clothes with bright colors. A camera around the neck, and a generally lost look on the face.

They're not armed. It is illegal to carry most weapons on common carriers such as airliners. Goblins know this and purposefully go after the tourist.

Tourists make the mistake of flaunting wealth. They wear expensive jewelry, and carry large amounts of cash.

False sense of confidence. When people travel from developed countries such as Japan, the United States or England to third world countries they incorrectly assume the country they are visiting has the same overall safety as the developed country. Those tourists are often unpleasantly surprised at how dangerous the country is that they are visiting.

Tourists are assumed to be rich. People in most third world countries do not have the money to travel. So they think that anyone who can travel must be rich. They often resent that supposed wealth, and are willing to take drastic action to take it from tourists.

So, what is the answer? Never travel to new areas? No, that would be an awful way to live your life. Travel is fun and exciting, and no matter what the possible threats are, you shouldn't let a few dirt-bags ruin your fun.

The key is to avoid trouble by not standing out as a lost, vulnerable tourist.

Learn about the area you will be traveling to. The more familiar you are with the new area, the more confident you will be as you stroll down the street. Use the Internet to get maps of the area, and information on the sights you want to visit. Find out as much as you can about the culture of the people you will be visiting. Your primary goal is to blend in.

Find out what people usually wear in the area you will be visiting.

Hopefully you will already have similar clothes. It is best not to wear brand new clothes.

Go with a group if possible. There is strength in numbers for tourists.

Being with a group is especially important if it is your first time to the new country. A tour group is a great way to go because the tour guide will only take you to areas that are "safe" for tourists. Do not venture out on your own, unless you know for certain the area you are going to visit is relatively safe. Stay in the neighborhoods that are set up for tourists.

Consider arming yourself with weapons that can be carried on common carriers. A good solid three foot walking stick is an example. A goblin would think twice before trying anything with you carrying such a weapon.

Don't carry cash. Use credit cards, or travelers checks. If they are stolen, you can get them replaced. If you normally carry your wallet in your back pocket, change it to your front pocket. Pickpockets have a very hard time getting your wallet from the front. Carry a little extra cash in your sock or shoe, just in case you need some emergency money.

Don't tempt fate. Even if you think you are in a very safe area, do not leave valuables out in plain sight. Some desperate people might attempt to kill you in order to get your valuables.

Whenever you travel you must continually be in a heightened state of awareness. If you slip out of that aware state, you could find yourself in serious danger.

By using the aforementioned concepts you should be able to have a safe, enjoyable trip with little chance of being attacked.

This article was written by Scott Flint a 5th degree Black Belt with 27 years of experience teaching Self-Defense.

This article is from the Travel Safe chapter of Scott's Self-Defense book titled: Waking The Tiger Within--How To Be Safe From Crime

You can order this book at: http://SelfDefenseManual0.tripod.com

This is a 136 page comprehensive Self Defense Manual. <fulltext>Things You Need To Know Before You Book a Hotel Online

by: Chloe Lim

Does it seem as if every time you look around on the internet for a hotel room, you find more web sites that say you can get a hotel room for less?

Though it may sound enticing, online hotel booking has its own set of challenges. An online discount hotel booking web site should provide the following basic things:

Offer real time hotel room booking

Allow date amendments and cancellations online

Rates should clearly indicate what currency is being quoted, whether the rate is per person or per room, and what is and what is not included in the rate, and, if taxes are not included, how much they will be

The location information of the hotel should be listed on the hotel description page. This can help identify the distance from the hotel to certain landmarks or the airport

All the information regarding the hotel (such as facilities and rates) should be located on each hotel's web page

Pictures of the hotel

Star quality rating, consumer ratings with consumer reviews

Does the online hotel booking site have a membership program (like http://www.ratestogo.com/membership) that offers reward points and privileges

Checklist before and after you book a hotel room online

If you follow this checklist, you're less likely to have nasty surprises in store for you:

Have you seen the hotel on a map, and do you understand the exact location?

Do you know what the rate is, which currency it is quoted in, whether this rate is per person or per room, per night or per complete stay?

Do you understand the standard/quality of the hotel?

Does the rate include everything or are taxes, surcharges, gratuities, service fees, etc, extra? How much are such extra costs if they exist? Are there any other mandatory costs that you might have to pay?

Are there any extra inclusions such as breakfast, and, if so, is it a cooked or continental breakfast?

Do you understand what room type and bedding configuration you will be getting?

Is your reservation guaranteed? Will it be held for late arrival?

What is the change, cancellation and refund policy if you need to change or cancel your booking?

Did the credit card number you gave to the internet booking service merely guarantee your room, or did they charge a deposit (or even the full stay) at the time you made your booking to the credit card?

You may contact the hotel directly 24 hours after you’ve made your online booking, to confirm that the booking has appeared in their local computer system. You may also check with them to see if the booking is the same as you have made in terms of room type, room rate, dates, etc.

If you have any special needs or requirements or expectations, you should double check with the hotel directly that these special service requests have been received by them and are understood and will be provided.

Most importantly, if you prepaid any amounts to the internet website, confirm that you won't be billed again by the hotel directly. Remember that most internet websites are completely independent of the hotels they service, and could be located anywhere in the world; once they get your money; there is no guarantee that they will pass it on to the hotel in time for your stay.

www.ratestogo.com (http://www.ratestogo.com) is a website that has answers to all these questions. <fulltext>Cuba-Pictures.com Launched by Lonely Planet Author

by: David Stanley

The original author of Lonely Planet Cuba announces the launch of Cuba-Pictures.com, a 14-page collection of 126 travel photos of Cuba.

All photos in this picture gallery are by David Stanley, who researched and wrote the first two editions of Lonely Planet Cuba, published in 1997 and 2000. Stanley first visited Cuba in 1975, and over the next four years he represented a Canadian tour company on Isla de la Juventud, at Varadero, and in Havana. Since then, he has revisited Cuba dozens of times.

A few of Stanley's photos originally appeared in Lonely Planet Cuba, while the rest are published here for the first time. They offer a cross section of Cuba, with the emphasis on "real Cuban life" rather than the artificial world of tourism. The images are intended to convey the atmosphere of some very special places, and the warm, friendly people who call Cuba home.

Each page of pictures provides an introduction to a specific area, and all photos are fully captioned. The site also features a map of Cuba, a shopping mall with Cuban music, guides, and films, and a selection of travel links. http://www.cuba-pictures.com is now open to visitors.

About The Author

David Stanley has been writing travel guides since 1979. His pioneering guidebooks embrace the South Pacific islands, Micronesia, Alaska, Eastern Europe, Cuba, and parts of Canada. Stanley researched and wrote the first three editions of Eastern Europe on a Shoestring, Lonely Planet's first guide to Europe. Though the current 3rd edition of Lonely Planet Cuba was updated by another writer, much of Stanley's material remains in the guide. His travel pictures of Cuba are now freely accessible at http://www.cuba-pictures.com.

</fulltext>

<fulltext>India on the Rails

by: Roozbeh Gazdar

If life is a journey than, in India at least, it chugs along on two parallel steel lines… the railways. No reference here to the local trains of Mumbai, India’s commercial capital, where citizens spend a substantial portion of their waking hours commuting increasing distances within ever expanding city-limits.

This one is grand - a vast rail network criss-crossing the length and breadth of the country, spanning over plains and rivers, through forest and deserts, reaching out to the obscurest of villages and connecting them to the rest of this immense, wonderful conglomeration of people, towns, animals, history and culture, that is India.

While air travel saves you time and driving by road lends flexibility to your schedule, there is really no better way to know India than by train. The general compartment especially is a startling microcosm of the multi-caste, multi-lingual eclecticism of the country that immediately disarms you with its robust back-thumping welcome. No formalities here as you are expected to roll up your sleeves and join in the abundant overflow of food, drink, conversation. Personal details are unabashedly pried into, common ground or acquaintances traced over a maze of memory, addresses exchanged and promises to visit, made…

A long Indian railway journey is an unparalleled display of the lay of the land. As the train traverses across different states it unfolds a fascinating tapestry of gradually changing landscapes, people, houses, shops and signboards. From my favourite perch, on the steps at the door, I have never failed to harvest intimate glimpses into rural life: a peasant tending his field or enjoying a meal under a shady tree, a young cowherd driving a boisterous herd to pasture, women transporting water over a parched terrain, a herd of deer peeping nervously through dappled afternoon shadows…

And then there are the numerous wayside stations, bustling centers of busy activity. Often no more than small shacks, these centers of village activity can be refreshingly beautiful, shaded by trees and with small well-tended gardens around them. But even more poignant are the isolated rail cabins or outposts that occur, seemingly in the midst of wind swept desolation, as a lone railway official holds out a green flag to give each train an all-clear sign as it hurtles by.

It’s then that it strikes you how this gigantic organization, the Indian Railways, the world’s biggest public sector employer, is so critically dependent for its smooth everyday functioning on all the various little cogs that keep its wheels turning, right down to the guy who covers an allocated distance on foot daily, manually checking the screws in the fish plates to see that everything is right.

A humbling thought really…

About The Author

Roozbeh Gazdar

Copywriter by profession, works for traveljini.com.

seo@traveljini.com

</fulltext>

<fulltext>Top Family Beach Vacation Destinations

by: Jolana Klobouk

Planning a family beach vacation? Looking for destinations with family resorts that have fun sports and activities for the whole family, all inclusive resorts where meals are included and kid clubs? Here are some of the most popular beach destinations for families to unwind and relax:

Mexico

Mexico, especially the Cancun area, and Mayan Riviera, an hour’s drive south of Cancun, is a popular place for family beach vacations. The Mayan Riviera is one of the regions of Mexico - and the world- which offers the richest variety of landscapes and archaeological treasures including Mayan ruins, coral reef, snorkelling lagoons, and eco-theme parks such as Xcaret. Hotels, resorts, restaurants, and attractions throughout Mexico welcome families with open arms.

Jamaica

Jamaica is considered by many to be the most beautiful of all the Caribbean Islands and is one of the top family-vacation destinations in the Caribbean. Many of Jamaica’s resorts offer supervised children's activities, babysitters, family discounts, and kid's meals. Jamaica has an abundance of top all-inclusive chains including: Sandals Beaches, SuperClubs Breezes resorts and Club Med. There are also many other family vacation options such as the Franklyn D. Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica, where families have their own vacation nanny during their stay.

Turks and Caicos

On a 12-mile stretch of satiny white-sand, Beaches Turks & Caicos is one of the premier family resorts on the island. With separate programs for infants, toddlers and teens, each is designed to give each age the activities they love. So when you're off doing your thing, they're off doing theirs. There are many other resorts to stay at this idyllic family beach destination

Bahamas

Home to the Atlantis Bahamas resort and many other excellent family resorts, there will not be a dull moment on your Bahamas family vacation. Blessed with the perfect location-less than 100 miles off the coast of Florida, the perfect climate- averaging a little over 75 degrees, and the perfect surroundings-crystal clear turquoise blue waters and pearly white beaches, the Islands of the Bahamas is the perfect destination for your next family beach vacation.

Hawaii

A Family Hawaii Vacation has it all. Beautiful beaches, world-class golf, surfing, shopping, swimming, top notch hotels, condominiums, eco tours, national parks, warm weather, and cool ocean breezes. The four islands that are popular for a family Hawaii Vacation are Oahu, Maui, the Big Island and Kauai.

Florida

Florida is a popular family beach destination because the climate is warm year round, it is easy to get to, it offers good value for your money, there are endless options for sightseeing and attractions for you family depending on what area you are in, and the beaches in Florida are numerous. In addition to beach destinations and of course Walt Disney World, there are tons of other family outings including Universal Studios, Sea World, Bush Gardens and many more.

Don’t forget about kid cruises

This is a very popular family vacation option and my personal favorite. Cruises with kids offer great value, choice and freedom! There are a lot of misconceptions about cruising such as it is only for older people and not suited for families, it is too rigid, there is nothing to do, you’ll feel trapped, you’ll get seasick, it’s too expensive! All is these statements are false and could not be further from the truth. Bring your kids along on almost any cruise and they'll have the time of their lives.

About The Author

Jolana Klobouk, a graduate of Carleton University, is the webmaster of www.best-family-beach-vacations.com. <fulltext>Living and Retiring in Bolivia

by: Shannon Roxborough

A beautiful and inexpensive place without a tourist in sight. Sound like a dream? It's not. This slice of paradise does exist. Nestled high in the Andes Mountains of South America, Bolivia is a little-known retreat exotically spiced with a unique Latin and Native American flavor. Bolivia has a lot to offer…a very low cost of living, unspoiled natural environment, friendly people and a range of climates to suit virtually every taste.

Property prices are among the lowest in Latin America and it has the potential to become the world's next great expatriate haven. Bolivia has long been a favorite destination of adventure travelers, yet few mainstream American and European tourists make it to this secretive outpost. Why? Well, perhaps it's because Bolivia isn't a destination you stumble across by accident. Shrouded by great mountain ranges, it lies hidden between Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Peru and Paraguay.

The country's most famous visitors were Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the American outlaws who fled to South America in the early 1900s - they are said to have had their last stand with the Bolivian army and are buried here. As recent as the 1980s, wise old men in towns throughout the Bolivian highlands could be heard gossiping about the fate of two of America's most notorious outlaws. In Bolivia, myths come thick and fast, and one legend has it that the Incas have an underground network of secret passageways on an island located in Lake Titicaca, which is praised by visitors as being one of the deepest blue and most beautiful bodies of water in the world.

Leave your worries at home

Bolivia is one of those countries that seduce you through sheer personality. The colorful bustle of its markets and street vendors, the liveliness of its nightlife, and the charm and friendliness of its people, make it one of the most livable places in Latin America. Bolivia has a bit of something for everyone: charming old-world colonial towns with great restaurants, museums, and nightlife, as well as slow-paced cozy developments in rural areas near indigenous villages, where hunting, gathering and fishing are a way of life.

The climate is another plus. Temperatures in Bolivia range from the mid 60s to the low 80s, with the average being in the mid 70s. Even the hottest days are always tempered by cooling breezes.

Bolivia is a republic with a presidential system of government. Its fully democratic, American style system retains the respect of individual rights and freedoms.

Bolivia enjoys a remarkably low crime rate, with violent crime being virtually unknown and theft not commonplace.

Americans, Canadians, Australians and most Europeans don't need a visa to spend up to 90 days as a tourist in Bolivia and nonresidents may buy property. Live the good life on less than $9,000 a year. Besides the fact that there's no such thing as a rat race in Bolivia, its biggest asset is its cost of living. You can stay in a clean, friendly hotel in the city center for $8 a night (or US$125 per month) where every meal costs less than $3. Groceries are up to 70% cheaper than in the United States or Europe. A routine trip to a good English-speaking doctor will set you back no more than $20. You can take in an American movie for only $2 or get a taxi across town for as little as 80 cents. And you're certainly not going to have high utility bills: Electricity and heating costs average $15 a month.

Cheap Real Estate

To give you an example of the costs, here are some properties on offer right now:

A 4-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 2500-square-foot home in an affluent neighborhood with a large garden, a garage, an alarm system, and every modern convenience, for $75,000.

A 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom, 800-square-foot apartment with a dining room, a kitchen, central heating, a balcony, and parking, costs $15,000.

Rentals are downright cheap by First World standards. Apartments begin at around $75 per month for something small, with houses starting at the $200 mark.

You could certainly rent a nice two-bedroom apartment in one of the best parts of town for $175 to $350 a month. And you can lease a luxury three-bedroom suburban home would rent for between $275 and $400 per month; homes with private swimming pools start at around $500 monthly.

Recently, I helped a client find a lot to build on for less than $5000, with good shopping, a lake and the airport all in walking distance.

These deals and many more make little-known Bolivia worth investigating.

About The Author

Copyright 2005 by Shannon Roxborough

Shannon Roxborough is an international lifestyle expert with close to 20 years experience. <fulltext>MALAYSIA: An Asian Retirement Paradise

by: Shannon Roxborough

Asia's best-kept secret for expatriates, Malaysia has a vibrant mix of foreign and indigenous tribal cultures, creating a veritable melting pot of peoples, traditions and religions.

A sizable enclave of foreigners (Brits, Americans, Australians, and Canadians) live full time or maintain holiday homes in Malaysia, and you'll find that just about everybody speaks English, since its compulsory in local schools.

Not only are three world-class playgrounds (Thailand, Bali, and the Philippines) all within a few hour's travel from Malaysia, but with miles of white sand coastline, tropical islands, and beachfront property galore, it has all the makings of a fairy-tale setting.

Despite being the capital of a developing nation, Kuala Lumpur is a modern cosmopolitan with clean streets and sidewalks and every modern convenience to found in New York or London. Home to the tallest building in the world, there are also FedEx and UPS offices, international banks, English cinemas and bookstores, western-style supermarkets, French and German bakeries, Chinese, Indian, and Italian restaurants, gourmet coffee, Cuban cigars, Internet cafés and some of the best shopping in the world!

One of the few things that lend a "Third-world" feel to the capital are the open-air night market, where local merchants peddle everything from fresh fruit and vegetables, to meat and fish, to exotic animals and traditional handicrafts.

All the major newspapers are available at newsstands, including the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Financial Times, the International Herald Tribune and The New York Times. Cable and satellite TV provides access to a wide variety of English-language programming, including CNN, the Discovery Channel, Filmnet and many more.

Despite the local Muslim population not drinking alcohol, Kuala Lumpur has some of the liveliest nightlife in the region and there are more than a fair share of clubs and bars, where tourists, expatriates and locals alike mingle and party. Though the official religion of Malaysia is Islam, great tolerance is shown for other religions, with many beliefs being represented and their adherents practicing openly, including Christians, Hindus, Buddhists, Taoists and Jews (the nearest synagogue is in neighboring Singapore).

Compared with other major Asian cities (Tokyo, Singapore, and Hong Kong, for example), Kuala Lumpur is downright cheap. Even in the over-priced tourist spots you can get a good meal for two for around $20. Outside of these places, a 3-course meal for two with all the trimmings, including drinks, will set you back no more than $10…a doctor's visit $8 to $15 and live-in domestic help $200 a month.

Rental properties are readily available and not overly expensive by American or European standards. The cost of 2-bedroom rental apartments begins at around $225 per month, with 3-bedroom houses starting at $35,000. Naturally, comparable housing in expatriate communities or the luxurious suburban homes that date from British colonial period can set you back considerably more.

Other properties recently on offer include:

A 2-bedroom, 1-bathroom, 725-square-foot apartment with a dining room, a kitchen, ceiling fans, a walk-in closet, and parking, costs $45,215.

A small two-story bungalow with 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a kitchen, a living room, and a dining room going for $35,700.

A penthouse apartment, close to downtown, with a sea-view and a 350-sqare-foot terrace. It comes fully furnished and has 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, a kitchen, and a dining room. The asking price? $75,000.

A spacious 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom, 2500-square-foot condominium with a large living room, an elegant dining room, a fully equipped kitchen, and a pantry, for $125,250.

Though there are expensive restaurants and accommodations, there's simply no reason for you to check into a five-star hotel when you can stay in a clean, friendly hotel in the city center for $40 a night where every meal costs less than $5 per person.

CRIME-FREE AND FOREIGNER FRIENDLY

Of course, cheap living shouldn't be the only deciding factor when choosing a new home. As well as being very affordable, Malaysia is safe. The government's real no tolerance policy means street crime is virtually nonexistent.

The Malaysian government, through its "Silver-Haired Program," offers expatriate resident retirees extremely attractive benefits. Outside of nationals of Israel and Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro), the program is open to citizens of most countries. To qualify, you need only be over 50, show you can bring a guaranteed income of about $1300 per month into Malaysia (or open a savings account in Malaysia with $40,000), and have a local sponsor (which can easily be arranged).

Penang, a small island off the northwest coast, has been called the "Pearl of the Orient" and its beaches are a favorite tourist destination. The coastline is also dotted with many small, quiet seaside villages. The tropical rainforests and jungles offer many opportunities for exploring lush mountains, trekking through the jungle, or even taking a riverboat safari. The bountiful sea surrounding Malaysia provides for some of the best scuba diving and fishing anywhere in the world (Malaysia's seas are home to the Black Marlin, tuna, mackerel, sailfish, barracuda and a host of other species).

PRACTICAL BENEFITS

Medical care is good, with excellent hospitals and clinics in all the major towns. Doctors speak English, and the majority gained their qualifications in Western Europe or North America.

Although foreign residents must arrange private health insurance, visiting tourists who have an accident are entitled to free emergency treatment in public hospitals. A consultation with a private doctor in most cases will cost just $8 to $15.

When it comes to banking, management methods and the range of services offered closely follow the British model. Plus, most major world banks have full-service branches in Malaysia.

Many expatriates living here off investment income keep their cash growing tax free in Labuan, an offshore tax haven administered by Malaysia, and then bring into the mainland what's needed for living expenses. Labuan is also perfect for anyone looking for a private, offshore bank account, a tax-free corporation, a trust, or other offshore structures.

Led by Malaysian Airlines, the national carrier, the island is served by many major airlines, linking it the world through its international airports. A good network of modern roads covers the distances between towns, and Malaysian telecommunications are among the best in the world.

If you've ever thought about living overseas, you owe it to yourself to investigate Malaysia.

About The Author

Copyright 2005 by Shannon Roxborough

Shannon Roxborough is an international lifestyle expert with close to 20 years experience.
